About the Item

18th Century Creamware Plates with Mosaic Border, Set of four, Circa 1765-80 The creamware pottery plates are unusually molded with a border design known as mosaic or basket-weave and also with trellis panels with a shaped, wavy edge. The design originated in salt-glaze ware. Dimensions: 9 3/4 inch diameter x 1 inch height. Provenance: Susie Hilfiger Reference: "White Salt-Glazed Stoneware of the British Isles", Diana Edwards and Rodney Hampson. Page 140, Colour Plate 120, for an identical saltglaze plate excavated at Deer Street in Portsmouth, New Hampshire, now in the Strawbery Banke Museum, Portsmouth, New Hampshire. The author notes that Mosiac plates such as there were mentioned as early as 1757 in a London advertisement, and by John Bowcock of Bow in 1756. (Ref: NY10291-PMRX)
