Grainger Worcester Porcelain Dessert Service, Persian Revival with Birds, 1855

About the Item

This is a stunning part dessert service produced by Grainger Worcester in 1855, consisting of twelve plates and two low diamond shaped comports. Grainger was one of the leading factories in Worcester in the 19th century. It started in the early days of British bone china production at the very beginning of the century, and was merged with Royal Worcester about 100 years later. During this era they were among the leaders of china production, producing exceptionally finely painted and sculpted forms, often jewelled, pierced or reticulated and decorated with exceptional art work. This service is beautifully potted in the Persian Revival style, with reticulated detail on the rims (not pierced, but similar in shape to many of their famous pierced wares), jewelled dots on the rim, and leaving out three panels with flower arrangements and three little medallions with single forget-me-nots. Each plate and comport has a stunning hand painted bird in their own natural environment. The birds are mostly grouse and song birds - these were popular birds as the well to do people of those days would go out hunting and had a great knowledge of all the different birds around. These plates are exceptional in their artistry and execution and the colours are stunning: bright green, hot pink and lots of gilt. Each plate is marked with a diamond mark dating it to January 1855, and the pattern number 3/7575. Condition report: The set is in excellent antique condition with only very few flaws. The gilding on some of the plates has rubbed slightly in the centre of the plate; the gilding in the centre of both comports has been touched up professionally; one plate has a staple repair and one plate has a crack, both of which are barely visible from the front and do not detract from their beauty. Other than this, there is no crazing or damage, and hardly any wear. Kilns were fired on coal in the 1800s, and this meant that china from that period can have some firing specks from flying particles. This set is very smooth but you might see some of these specks. Please note that all items in my shop are of vintage or antique condition. They have often been used for many years and can have normal signs of wear. If they are from the 19th Century, please note that items fired in coal-fired kilns nearly always have irregularities at the surface and/or specks under the glazing. I will reflect any damage, repairs or heavy wear in the item description but some minor scratches, nicks and stains can be normal for vintage items and need to be taken into account. There is widespread confusion on the internet about the difference between chips and nicks, or hairlines and cracks. I will reflect any damage as truthfully as I can, i.e. a nick is a tiny bit of damage smaller than 1mm and a chip is something you can see with the eye; a hairline runs over the surface glazing but not the body of the item and a crack runs through the body of the item, usually weakening its structure. Dimensions: plates 23cm (9"), comports 21cm (8.75") X 30cm (12") and 7cm (2.75") high.
