Napoleonic Sevres Style Porcelain Dessert Service

About

This luxurious dessert service is a fascinating piece of history as well as an exceptional work of porcelain in the Sevres style: each piece is individually decorated with the portrait bust of an important figure from the Napoleonic era in France. These figures include Mme de Stael (1766-1817), an important woman of letters during the French Revolutionary and Napoleonic era; Letizia Bonaparte (also known as Letizia Ramolino, 1750-1836), Napoleon's mother; Joachim-Napoleon Murat (1767-1815), Napoleon's 1st Admiral; and Marie Louise (Duchess of Parma, 1791-1847), Napoleon's second wife. These figures have clearly been chosen to mimic the fantastic porcelain dessert and dinner services commissioned by Napoleon and completed by the Sevres Porcelain Manufactory in the early 19th Century. The edges of each piece are decorated in the classic Sevres cobalt blue, as well as with gilt detailing in the form of acanthus leaves and other loosely geometric floral motifs. There are spurious inscriptions on the underside of each piece reading, 'Offert par Lucien Bonaparte a la Mme Lefevre / Manufacture Imperiale de Sevres'. The set comprises twelve plates, together with four tazza, or cake stands, two of which are taller and the other two shorter. This dessert service will make an excellent set for anyone with an interest in Napoleon and Napoleonic antiques. The dimensions for the individual pieces are as follows: Plates: height 2.5cm, diameter 24.5cm Cake: stands height 8cm, diameter 23.5cm Tazzas: height 14cm, diameter 23.5cm
