About the Item

Fabulous, intaglio carved, Baccarat vase in the Aesthetic style dating around 1880. Depicting two classically dressed women arranging fruit and plants on a pedestal with a landscape background with a large finely detailed tree. As usual with such Baccarat pieces the cutting is of exceptional quality. Intaglio cutting is notoriously hard to photograph so I have shown it on both white and black backgrounds and with bright sunlight. The vase blank is one of the Chinoiserie series introduced by Baccarat in the late 1870 featuring a number of classical Chinese shapes and forms. Baccarat still exists today and has been the creator of the finest crystal for hundreds of years. The last quarter of the 19th century was probably their greatest period.

Harrach Glass Vase Decorated with Classical Figures c1890
By Harrach Glassworks
Located in Worcester Park, GB
Unusual example of an olive green two handled enamelled vase by Harrach, depicting two classical figures: one a bearded warrior and the other a older woman, both in white over orange. The vase is additionally finely enamel decorated around the top and on the back with stylised patterns. The two handles are hot applied. Harrach has been the backbone of Bohemian, and possibly European, glass for the last 300 years. It proudly celebrated its tri-centenary in 2012. Before Ludwig Moser was allowed to have his own Glassworks he, like almost everyone else in the region, bought his blanks from Harrach. In fact we will probably never know how much glass, supposedly made my other great glass makers of Europe, were in fact made and finished in the Harrach Glassworks including Emile Galle. We do know that vast ranges of Legras was made by Harrach, probably under licence and possibly the majority of the glass we think of as Fratelli Tosso...
