About the Item

Beautifully crafted glass octopus by the famous Austrian glassmakers Bimini. Bimini glass was set up in Vienna in 1923 by Fritz Lampi and Artur and Josef Berger who were architects.Bimini made very fine pieces in a style sometimes mistaken for 1950s Italian Murano glass, with filigree swirls and stripes, and importantly little figures and animals. It is unlike Murano glass as it is much lighter nd finer and generally had paper labels which have disappeared. The name Bimini was taken from a poem by Heinrich Haine, 1852, which refers to Bimini as a 'miracle island ith the spring water of eternal youth'. Lampi was also a poet and publisher before creating his company which was an immediate success. He rented a basement and employed an industrial glass blower who blew the designs of his brother in law Joseph Berger. Bimini glass won International prizes and was exhibited around he world but this was interrupted when Nazi Germany. annexed Austria. As they were Jews they had to flee for their lives, leaving their works behind, and settled in England where they were welcomed.
