Antique Tibetan Silver Ceremonial Ewer

About the Item

This is a water ewer used in Tibetan ritual offerings to the "hungry ghosts". They have been reborn so, as a result of greed and avarice and are condemned to wander as spirits with big bellies and tiny necks through which food and drink can only pass painfully. The jug itself has a tiny neck. The lid is adorned with turquoise and coral and a lotus finial. The repoussé panels depict one side The Four Harmonious Friends and on the other The Old Man of Long Life. It dates from the late 19th or early 20th century. As one would expect, it is made to a very high standard. We have more information available about this lot for interested buyers. I am indebted to Dr John Clarke for assistance in cataloging this jug
