Doulton Lambeth Floral Design Art Pottery Jug by Edith Lupton

About the Item

A stunning and unusual Doulton Lambeth stoneware jug decorated with floral designs by renowned artist Edith D Lupton and believed to date from the early 1880’s. The jug stands on a wide round unglazed foot rim with recessed base and has a wide squat round body with a narrow tall neck and large shaped pouring spout. The jug has a simple handle which rests on top of the rim with a simple pinched terminal. The jug is decorated with a large floral bloom to the centre with spreading foliage set against an incised ‘spider-web’ ground and with beaded border droplets applied around the neck with similar patterning around the lower edge of the body. The jug is hand decorated in a salt glazed finish in graduating tones of brown with honey colors applied within a white slip outline to the large floral bloom and similar styling to the spreading foliage. The droplets are decorated in blue with white painted beading and with a dull blue glazed pouring spout. With blue glazes to the inner top of the jug and a mottled brown glazed handle. The jug has impressed makers marks to the base along with artist marks for Edith D Lupton along with assistant marks for Annie Askew, Emily Welch and Letitia Rosevear. Provenance: Acquired from the UK Art Market. The jug is offered in good original condition.
