About the Item

A rare George III Neo Classical Water/Wine Ewer made in Sheffield in 1774 by John Rowbotham & Company. This beautiful Jug stands on a square pedestal foot, with four ball feet. The sides of the base are decorted with vertical linear designs and flower heads in roundels. The foot is also decorated with a circular beaded band, rising to a vase shaped body, also displaying the same linear band shown on the foot. The incuse neck rises to a beaded rim and domed hinged cover terminating in an acorn finial. The wicker bound scroll handle is attached to the main body with unusual scroll, and raying shell, mouldings. The front of the main body is engraved with a contemporary Armorial, with Crest above, flanked by crossed foliate branches and blue bell garlands. This piece is in excellent condition, is fully marked on the side of the neck and with the sterling mark on the cover. This piece is also very desirable as it represents a rare, early, example of silver made in Sheffiled. The Assay Office was established the year before, in 1773, and this centre had a reputation for producing Classically inspired pieces. Additional information: Height: 11.75 inches, 29.38. Diameter at the widest point: 4.5 inches, 11.25 cm.
