About the Item

An antique Victorian majolica pewter mounted lidded pottery jester jug by renowned makers Minton and dated 1870. The lower body of the jug has a relief molded twisted vine with the main body formed as a brick work tower with four dancing figures, two ladies and two men, in deep relief set against the wall of the tower. The twisted vine continues to form the handle and runs around the top edge of the tower body. The cover, of scallop shell shape is mounted with the head of a jester and is set in a hinged pewter mount. The jug is typically hand painted in bright and vibrant majolica tones with a green glazed base and has various impressed Minton marks along with a date code for 1870.
