"Riding to Market, " Charming and Important Modern Pitcher by ICS, Likely Gambone
About the Item
Full of charm and gorgeous color, with a modern approach to traditional imagery, this 1930s pitcher made by Industria Ceramica Salernita (I.C.S.) features a line of donkeys supporting a man taking baskets of fruit to market. I.C.S. was the most important of several 20th century ceramic art studios in Campania, and this piece dates to the late 1930s when Guido Gambone was the artistic director of the company. The company was founded in 1927 by Max Malamerson, a German artist, in Vietri Sul Mar, and promulgated a new form of ceramic art that brought together folk themes with modern art, much as Picasso did two decades later in Vallauris, France. Portions of the pitcher have a wonderful, rough volcanic glaze that prefigures the work that Gambone did after the War.
