A fully hand built ceramic platter, in dark clay with black glaze and metallic black hand-painted decoration. This is a unique creation, made by artist Helena Starcevic in her Hudson Valley Studio.
The hand-curved rim shows the hand-made nature of the piece and multiple firings achieve this unique effect. It is a dark plate that catches the light and shows the metallic highlights. Functional work made by a sculptor always reveals the artist behind the creation.

Helena Starcevic Ceramics produces work that straddles the line between fine and decorative art. Each piece is one of a kind, hand-built entirely by the artist in her New York studio. Taking inspiration from the natural world, Ms. Starcevic's work includes references to the stark beauty of the desert, prehistoric cave paintings, and the human form (within and without). Everything is filtered through Ms. Starcevic’s own singular aesthetic, at once quiet yet strong, meditative, and beautiful. Pieces are made in different clays and finishes, and at different scales. Groupings are available. Helena Starcevic’s ceramic pieces are held in private collections across the US and Europe. She has held numerous residencies including one at the Museum of Art and Design in New York City.

This small hand built ceramic bowl is truly unique, from the rustic hand formed shape to the surface treatment. It was wood-fired in an "Anagama" kiln in Upstate New York, a traditional Japanese kiln. These kilns are made of special bricks built on a slowly slanting hillside with several firing chambers. Wood must be added to the fire over several days and nights. Heat and smoke from the ash swirls through the kiln, landing almost randomly on the work.
