Mid-century French Ceramic Large plate by Marcel Giraud - Vallauris - 1960s

About the Item

Mid-century French Ceramic Large plate by Marcel Giraud - Vallauris - 1960s Enamaled and decorated with vegetal motifs in brown and ochre tones Signed under the base " Giraud". Circa 1960-1970. Unique piece. In very good condition ----------- Marcel Giraud, French ceramist, settled in the 1950s in Vallauris, village known for its ceramics and boomed in the 1950s by the arrival of Pablo Picasso who now also worked in pottery. Located on the Azue coast, this village becomes in this post-war period an intense place of creation where Pablo Picasso launches out in the pottery and where many artists such as Jean Cocteau, Marc Chagall, Fernand Léger mix. Roger Capron, Robert Picault, Suzanne Ramié became renowned ceramists. But pottery is above all an art of fire, so his desire for knowledge leads him to the Tolia workshop where he experimented with wood-firing, the only one at the time. He learned the alchemy of fire, the chemistry of oxides and the construction of kilns. After having worked for Argonautes and Albert Thiry, Marcel Giraud launched his own workshop in 1960. For fifteen years, he produces decorative and culinary ceramics that he signs Cardelle at first, then with his name Marcel Giraud.
