Rose had previously trained at the Caughley Porcelain manufactory in Shropshire and began producing his own pottery nearby at Jackfield around 1780. His rapid success allowed him to acquire the Caughley Porcelain factory in 1799, which then became the main factory for Coalport Porcelain.
