About the Item

Russel Wright "Oceana" sculptural serving bowl circa 1938 produced by Klise Woodworking Company, Grand Rapids, MI. Hazelwood in the form of deep-sea fauna. This particular one had a split in the middle and was repaired, thus the 50% off sale. The Oceana line had begun in 1935 when Wright designed a series of organic-form bowls, trays, and other objects in shapes taken from marine motifs like shells and seaweed, for Klise Wood Working Company of Grand Rapids, Michigan. Made from a variety of solid American woods, these decorative and tableware accessories were carefully designed for the constraints of machine production but with a distinct hand carved appearance. Literature Elodie Courter, “Notes on the exhibition of useful objects,” Bulletin of the Museum of Modern Art, vol. 6, no. 6, January 1940, front cover for the centerpiece bowl Ann Kerr, Collector's Encyclopedia of Russel Wright, Second Edition, Paducah, Kentucky, 1998, pp. 112-13, 115, 119 Donald Albrecht, Robert Schonfeld and Lindsay Stamm Shapiro, Russel Wright: Creating American Lifestyle, exh. cat., Cooper-Hewitt National Design Museum, New York, 2001, pp. 29, 68-69 for the centerpiece bowl.
