Vintage French Decorative Large Platter by Albert Thiry 'circa 1970s'

About the Item

Large mid-century decorative platter (circa 1970s) by Albert Thiry. A creamy-white glaze with touches of blue-grey provides the background for a colourful thistle motif in the centre recess. The rim is an earthy brown with incised shapes in white. The incised motif in the centre has depth and is wonderfully tactile. The markings and colouring are quintessential Albert Thiry. A stunning wall hanging (holes in place on the underside) or centre piece in a delightful Provençal style. In fair-to-good overall condition. There is a chip under the lip of the piece which is only visible if one lifts the platter. It is visible in the photos attached. Signed: 'Thiry' on earthy clay base of dish. This gallery finds that Thiry's works are more and more in demand in overdue recognition of his artistic creativity. Please enjoy the many photos accompanying this listing. Upon request a video of this piece will be provided. About the Artist: Albert Thiry (1932-2009) was born in Nice, France. His family moved to Vallauris where he spent most of the school holidays in the potteries; in 1956 he was taken on as an assistant decorator with an opportunity to make his own pieces. Albert and his wife, Pyot, set up their own pottery in 1961. Their standard production, in Vallauris clay with added grog to emphasise rusticity, resulted in delightful pieces both highly elaborate and utilitarian. Dimensions: Height 8 cm / 3.1" Diameter 41.5 cm / 16.3".
