Antique Von Schierholz Rococo Meissen-Style Floral Encrusted Porcelain Basket

About the Item

A memorable Valentine's Day gift for someone special. This rare antique Von Schierholz Rococo Meissen-style floral encrusted porcelain basket with Schierholz Plaue mark indicates a manufacture date of between 1907 – 1927. Established in 1817 in Plaue, Thuringia in Germany, Von Schierholz porcelain became well known for its character steins. Von Schierholz also produced luxury ware, such as the floral encrusted porcelain basket. This trinket dish is hand painted and decorated in Rococo style with gilding and delicate appliqued and painted leaves and flowers in green, blue, pink, and yellow. Although the style is Meissen-like with its encrusted flowers, the reticulation of the basket uses a different technique that appears to be hand crafted rather than molded. This technique and the undulating triangular shape of the trinket dish make for a rare find. The detail and craftsmanship of this trinket dish suggests that it may have been made by Von Schierholz’s best modeler, Edmund Haase, who there between 1884 and 1914. Edmund Haase studied as a sculptor at the Munich Academy of Arts and was believed to be the original creator of the famed character steins. Along with the Schierholz Plaue mark, there is an incised number 88, probably to indicate the model number. There is also an underglaze mark in red (*OV) that is possibly the artist’s mark. There are minute chips off several petals, but this is not noticeable to the naked eye.
