About the Item

Exquisite large and rare Meissen Art Nouveau porcelain group: Triton adorned with water lily wreath on his head, half man, half fish with scaled legs leaning against a high wave and with outstretched arms pulling the cast net to himself and rejoicing over the catch contained therein, a beautiful, anxiously writhing nerid, the little cupid boy squatting on his left thigh curiously examining it. Other small fish and a water lily in the net that encircles the sculpture like the rim of a bowl. Around 1900, Paul Helmig designed a series of imaginative figures, bowls and ornamental vessels with mermaids, tritons and children for the Meissen manufactory. The size, detailed execution and elaborate staffing make Helmig's model one of the most imposing creations of the Art Nouveau period. Designer: PAUL HELMIG (1859 - 1939) The sculptor and modeller studied at the arts and crafts school in Dresden, Germany, and worked for the Meissen manufactory from 1872 to 1925. Helmig specialized in the design of groups of figures, clock cases and vessels with figures both in the Rococo style and, later, in the Art Nouveau style. Model T 53 was created and made circa 1902.
