About the Item

Blond boy with woollen hat and mittens, blue ski trousers, yellow jumper and green scarf, cheerfully striding along with skis shouldered and hand casually tucked into his trousers. Based on the oversized snowshoes. Manufactory: Terra, Walter Bosse, Vienna, Austria Made 1947-1951 Ceramics, red earthenware, hand-painting, glossy finish Designed by WALTER BOSSE (1904 - 1979) Austrian ceramic artist and designer. Walter Bosse graduated from the School of Applied Arts in Vienna, where Franz Cizek and Michael Powolny were among his teachers. He also designed for the Wiener Werkstätte under the direction of Josef Hoffmann. He opened his first ceramics workshop in Kufstein in 1924, but was forced to close it in 1937. He subsequently worked for numerous ceramics and porcelain manufacturers, including Goldscheider and Augarten in Vienna. Walter Bosse founded several new companies, including the company ‘Terra’, in Vienna in 1947. He later moved to Germany, where he cast his famous metal figures. Walter Bosse's works are in great demand among collectors and art lovers and are among the most original and charming ever created in the field of arts and crafts. His figurines, mostly animals, are characterised by a fine understanding of material and technique, but above all by a touch of the questionable and comical, revealing a rare humour that borders on the grotesque, but remains endearing and captivating. In the 1950s to the 1970s, Bosse's figures were offered across a broad spectrum, but they were also counterfeited worldwide. Bosse tried to market his designs himself and receive royalties for them, and had to go through a gruelling legal process in court to do so. He is thus considered the founder of modern copyright law for designer goods and arts and crafts.
