Chinese Export Porcelain Trompe Giant L'oeil Peach Altar Fruit
About the Item
Chinese Export Porcelain Trompe L'oeil Giant Peach Altar Fruit,
Circa 1850-1890
The extremely large Chinese Export model of a giant fruit is naturalistically modeled as a peach with a two-tone green body and a pinky red tip with leaves and vines on the top. This is the largest such fruit I've seen.
Dimensions: 8 inches high x 10 inches deep x 9 3/4 inches wide.
Condition: Good with a tiny spot on the red tip invisibly retouched.
Longevity and Immortality:
The peach, particularly the mythical "peaches of immortality," is a powerful symbol of a long and healthy life, and even eternal existence.
Queen Mother of the West (Xiwangmu):
According to legend, Xiwangmu, a prominent figure in Chinese mythology, grew a garden of these celestial peaches, which ripened only once every few thousand years, granting immortality to those who ate them.
Taoism and Spiritual Cultivation:
In Taoist traditions, peaches are also associated with internal alchemy and spiritual cultivation, representing the "ripening" of wisdom and enlightenment.
Art and Literature:
Peaches and peach blossoms are frequently depicted in Chinese art, paintings, and literature, often as symbols of good fortune and a long life.
Examples in Art:
The Chinese god of longevity, Sau, is often depicted holding a peach.
Peaches are featured in artwork, furniture, clothing, jewelry, and housewares.
Buddha is sometimes illustrated holding a peach.
Other Symbolisms:
Fertility: Peaches are also associated with fertility and new beginnings.
Spring: The peach blossoms, especially, symbolize the arrival of spring and renewal.
Innocence and Purity: The soft, delicate flesh of the peach can also evoke a sense of innocence and purity.
Peach Blossom Spring:
The phrase "peach blossom spring" (桃花源) is a well-known literary term, referring to an ideal, utopian society in harmony with nature, often used in art and literature.

Chinese export porcelain bacchus mug after Derby Porcelain,

The Chinese Export porcelain mug is modeled after a Derby Porcelain original as the head of Bacchus, the face naturalistically & delicately enameled. The eyebrows, beard and hair picked out with lightly etched brown lines. Around his head is a garland of vine leaves enameled in green, the veins of the leaves well delineated in grey, the bunches of grapes in a rich purple. The "C" shaped handle is decorated with stylized vine leaves, the sides of the thick handle with gold lappets.
