About the Item

First Period Worcester Porcelain Pine Cone Pattern Dishes, A Pair, Circa 1770 These rectangular dishes are a quintessential example of First Period Worcester porcelain, dating from the Dr. Wall era (1751-1783). Executed in a vibrant underglaze blue, they feature the intricate and highly sought-after "Pine Cone" pattern. The central design is a composition of Rococo and Chinoiserie influences, blending exotic and naturalistic motifs. It is skillfully transfer-printed with a dense arrangement of stylized pine cones, various fruits, and lush flowers, all interwoven with delicate foliage. The scene is brought to life by the inclusion of several fluttering butterflies, adding a sense of movement and grace. The gently canted rim is adorned with smaller, complementary floral sprays, creating a harmonious and balanced design. Dimensions: 11 5/8 inches wide x 8 1/8 inches deep x 1 inch high (40.22cm wide x 20.65cm deep). Mark: The base bears the factory's printed shaded crescent mark in underglaze blue, a characteristic mark of this period. Provenance: Private Maine Collection Jean and Joseph Connolly Collection, Montréal Reference: Worcester Blue and White Porcelain 1751 - 1790, Branyan, French & Sandon, Page 382, II.C.11.
