First Period Worcester Porcelain Pine Cone Pattern Shaped Basin,
Circa 1770
This shaped oval rare deep basin with shell corners is a quintessential example of First Period Worcester porcelain, dating from the Dr. Wall era (1751-1783). Executed in a vibrant underglaze blue, it features the intricate and highly sought-after "Pine Cone" pattern.
The central design is a composition of Rococo and Chinoiserie influences, blending exotic and naturalistic motifs. It is skillfully transfer-printed with a dense arrangement of stylized pine cones, various fruits, and lush flowers, all interwoven with delicate foliage. The scene is brought to life by the inclusion of several fluttering butterflies, adding a sense of movement and grace. The gently scalloped rim is adorned with smaller, complementary floral sprays, creating a harmonious and balanced design.
The rim with molded shell-form handles in the four corners.
Diameter: 12 1/2 inches wide x 9 3/4 inches deep x 4 inches high.
Mark: The base bears the factory's printed shaded crescent mark in underglaze blue, a characteristic mark of this period.
