Satsuma ware was originally dark plain clay produced in Satsuma province typically used for simple peasant wares or the Buddhist tea ceremony. These newer designs became popular in the European market and an industry grew up for a new type of "Satsuma" ware for export. These new designs, like this example, were generally of ivory ground with elaborate imari palette decoration.
