Large Mythological Meissen Group 'Triumph Of Venus', by J.J. Kaendler, c. 1870

About the Item

Rare and excellent porcelain sculpture: Depiction of Venus, the Roman goddess of love and beauty (Greek: Aphrodite), as a young woman with her hair tied back at the nape of her neck, covered by a softly draped shawl with her upper body remaining free, accompanied by a winged Cupid boy on a cushion and blue shawl, sitting in a large shell, carried by three tritons, hybrid creatures of man and fish, with a spring below the shell, whose lush waters flow in rich streams over the high piled rock. Made of two parts screwed together, on an irregular rock base with a gold rim. Designer: JOHANN JOACHIM KÄNDLER (1706 - 1775) chief sculptor at the Meissen manufactory from 1742 to 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer) , Gallant Figurines, etc. Design of the group 1769.
