The Details Are Stunningly Sculptured = Finest Modelling Manufactory: Meissen Dating: made circa 1870 Hallmarked: Meissen Mark with Pommels on Hilts (19th century) First Quality model number W 56 / painter's number 6 Material: multicolored porcelain, partially golden painted, glossy finish Technique: handmade porcelain Style: Rococo Design: -- Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706 - 1775) The sculptor was since year 1731 modeller of Meissen manufactory - he is one of the best modellers Meissen manufactory ever had. - Kaendler designed this GALLANT COUPLE ON SETTEE (MODEL W 56) in period 1737 - 40. First Quality Specifications: --A noble couple clad in elegant Rococo garments has taken place on a sofa / settee in order to make music: The lady plays a lute whereas the nobleman is doing music with a transverse flute. A pug dog lying on sofa is watching the noble couple. - Please look at the abundantly sculptured details (for example at the lady's elegant dress with underskirt and mantle as well as at man's garments - mantle, vest, pants and saber/sabre). The painting is of excellent quality, too. The couple depicted here is the composer, court chapel master, harpsichordist and flutist Johann Adolf Hasse (born in Hamburg 1699 - died 1783 in Venedig) and his wife Faustina Hasse-Bordoni, a songstress. The pug dog is a hint that the couple was member of the so-said 'Order of the Pug': This one (German: Mops-Orden) was a para-Masonic society founded by Roman Catholics. It is believed that it was founded in 1740 by Klemens August of Bavaria to bypass the papal bull ‘In eminenti apostolatus’ of 1738. The constitution of the Order of the Pug allowed women to become members, as long as they were Catholic. The Pug was chosen as a symbol of loyalty, trustworthiness and steadiness.
