Meissen gorgeous figurine: Tailor Riding on Goat. Dating: made 19th century (circa 1870) Material: white porcelain, glossy finish, finest painting Technique: handmade porcelain Designer: Johann Joachim Kaendler (1706 - 1775) / he was chief sculptor at Meissen manufactory as from 1742 until the year 1775. He is the most famous modeller Meissen manufactory ever had and created famous series such as Shepherd Figurines, Comedian's Children, Gardener Children (with Acier), Paris Town Criers (with Reinicke and Meyer), Gallant Figurines, etc. - Kaendler Designed This Figurine (MODEL 171) circa 1740. Subject: Tailor Of Count Bruehl Riding On Goat The tailor riding on goat holds his scissors in raised right hand, while the goat seizes an iron by mouth. Additionally, the tailor carries a basket on his back where some baby goats have been put into. - The figurine group is attached to rectangular flat base edged by golden rim. Presumptive Background: Heinrich, Count von Bruehl (1700 - 1763) was Chief Minister of Frederick Augustus II of Saxony from 1746 and director of the Meissen factory 1733-1763 during its so-called 'plastic period'. Grateful for the good services of his tailor Bruehl asked the man to name his reward. The tailor asked for an invitation to the next State banquet ... which horrified the Count because the lesser sort was not seen at such events. Nevertheless he had given his word so the invitation was duly issued. When the tailor arrived, however, he found himself a laughing stock as this satirical table decoration had been placed in the middle of the room. Oh, how everyone laughed ! There he is with his scissors, etc., riding on a goat. - Moral of this story: Sometimes it is better to labour and not to ask for any reward.
