About the Item

Ott another paradigmatic handmade ceramic vase by Studio Yoon Seok-hyeon Dimensions: W 30 x H 30 Materials: Ott(Natural resin from Ott tree), porcelain 2.5kg It is available to customize various colors in Ott's natural color range(brownish, yellowish to black) and to proceed with commissioned works. Glazed ceramic pieces are not recyclable for their re-production and they mostly end up in a landfill. In this process, various ground pollutions are caused by chemical and toxic particles resulting from some glazings. “It’s a shame that clay, one of the most natural materials, is treated in this way”. says Seok-hyeon Yoon. Technically, the clay itself is reusable as chamotte, powder of baked clay. Glassy ingredients of glazing complicate ceramic recycling. Because when they are baked as one, they fuse together. Then the earth is not pure anymore. He thought if he can get pure earth again from recycling systems such as those of glass and plastic, the earth might be reused through re-production. So, he searched for alternative glazings and found out “Ott” known as Korean traditional lacquering material. It’s a natural resin from the Ott tree and was widely used as glazing for woodenware in the past. To glaze Ott on the ceramic surface, it doesn’t need to be baked as it just drys out. And he discovered an interesting fact that it evaporates when it’s heated with the high temperature in kilns. It means that we can get clean earth again and reutilize it. This project aims for actualizing ceramic recycling for its re-production through introducing potentials of alternative glazing, Ott, by applying it on domestic ceramic objects to experiment with its practicalities and aesthetics. This handmade product’s Ott lacquer is a natural resin derived from trees. Therefore, it can be irregular in shape, color, and finishing. Natural Ott is waterproof, stain-free, and antiseptic. Ott does not absorb residues so that it is sanitary. To avoid discoloration, remove moisture thoroughly after dishwashing. This product used natural Ott as an alternative glazing. It does not have a negative impact on environments when decomposed. And Ott helps the raw ceramic materials to be recycled as chamotte. This product is consumable, and Ott is not 100% scratch-proof. So, frequent frictions may shorten its service life. Please do not cut food on this product. Also, avoid fire or boiling. Seok-hyeon Yoon I enjoy revaluing materials and objects which are always around us. Surroundings of everyday life often become a starting point for my design projects. I observe and analyze them and then try to link them to design, environment, society, and industry. My interest in projects is the materiality and socio-cultural value of design objects. With this interest, each of my projects reflects undiscovered stories of human life. As a designer, I interpret them with my own perspective and create objects to support and enhance our everyday life. My design process follows concept arrangement based on exploring a subject, in-depth research for materiality and contexts, hands-on practice such as drawing and model making and production.
