About the Item
This pair of perfume holder figures was produced in the mid-19th century by the well-known Parisian ceramist Jacob Petit (Paris 1796-1868).
Couple made up of a man and a woman in typically Scottish costumes, made of polychrome and gilded porcelain, marked “J.P.” in blue.
The woman is represented with a flower in her hand, while she removes the petals (some are present on the dress and in the right hand), while the man has a bagpipe resting on his leg.
Conservation: small chips and wear on the gold.
After having taught himself drawing, Jacob Petit entered, as a pupil, the studio of the painter Antoine Jaen Gros, a disciple of Jacques-Louis David, but, soon attracted by porcelain, he decided to join the Sèvres Manufactory in 1822.
Over time he managed to open his own factory in Fontainbleau, which employed 80 workers and a prestigious laboratory and atelier in Paris, at 26 rue del Bonsy. His artistic production mainly consists of decorative objects such as plates, vases, teapots, perfume bottles, but also lights and even fireplaces.
If for a long time Jacob Petit's creations were strongly criticized for the bright colors and excessive eclecticism that characterize them, today the objects bearing his signature are highly sought after for their originality, the richness of polychromy and are considered a guarantee quality.

Dresden Porcelain - A King's Obsession
In the early 1700s, King Augustus II, prince elector of Saxony, held goldsmith Johann Bottger prisoner and commissioned him to create gold. Bottger instead discovered the method of creating porcelain, a favored and valuable item in the king's eyes.
The king announced to Europe in 1710 that he would open a porcelain manufactory in Dresden. He instead opened one at nearby Albrechtsburg castle. Espionage was rampant, and the king guarded his porcelain secret, even though it meant imprisoning workers within the castle walls.
By 1720, the secret was leaked and porcelain producers popped up in Vienna and Venice. Dresden Porcelain adopted Saxon crossed swords in under-glaze blue as its distinguishing mark.
In 1736, the porcelain manufactory produced the "Swan Service...
