About the Item

Two Scandinavian Modern rice grain porcelain bowl by Friedl Holzer-Kjellberg for Arabia in Finland. A delicate "rice grain" porcelain bowl designed by the Finnish artist Friedl Holzer Kjellberg using an 18th century Chinese decorating technique. Small incisions are made in the porcelain that resemble rice. Her work was very popular and continued to be made at Arabia from circa 1942-1974. Signed on base: Arabia/ FHKJ/Finland. In excellent condition. Reference: "Design 1935-1965 What Modern Was," Martin Eidelberg, ed., pp.128-9. Elfriede "Friedl" Amalie Adolfine Holzer-Kjellberg, was born in Leoben, Austria, October 24, 1905, died September 11, 1993 in Porvoo. Holzer-Kjellberg was a pioneering Finnish potter who helped to make the Finnish art industry known abroad.
