About the Item

A superb and richly decorated early 19th-century Royal Vienna porcelain covered pitcher and matching underplate, finely executed in the neoclassical taste with lavish gilding and polychrome enamel decoration. The baluster-form pitcher rises on a flared circular foot and features a pronounced acanthus-molded handle terminating in a voluted scroll. Its domed lid is surmounted by a seated putto finial atop a gilt pomegranate knop. The body of the pitcher is adorned with two masterfully painted reserves framed in gilt cartouches, depicting classical scenes identified in iron red script on the base as "Hektor und Paris," referencing the legendary Trojan heroes. One reserve shows Paris seated in regal drapery as he is counseled by Hector, clad in armor and plumed helmet, with an attendant female figure gesturing alongside. The second scene shows a tender interior moment with three figures—possibly Paris again, in consultation with female figures. These genre tableaux are rendered with exceptional finesse, exemplifying the Vienna school’s tradition of fine miniaturist enamel painting. The remaining surface of the pitcher is elaborately decorated with gilt laurel bands, neoclassical motifs, and stylized anthemia set against a deep claret ground, bordered by celeste blue and iron red panels enriched with white classical scenes and decorative devices. The circular underplate continues this lavish scheme, incorporating a central medallion with radiating gilt anthemion and vine-work framed by a series of alternating classical panels with griffins, lyres, and Roman architectural devices. The underside of the pitcher bears the blue beehive (shield) mark of the Vienna porcelain manufactory along with the titled inscription “Hektor und Paris” in red script. The exceptional quality of the painting and gilding suggests the work of a senior decorator, possibly under the supervision of or inspired by Anton Kothgasser or Josef Nigg, both known for their mythological and classical subject vignettes at Vienna. This presentation-quality piece epitomizes the height of Biedermeier-era porcelain production in Austria and represents an extraordinary example of early 19th-century neoclassical revival aesthetics in European ceramics. Rare and important, it would have likely been produced for courtly or noble patronage, and its survival with matching underplate intact attests to its careful preservation over nearly two centuries. Measures: 7.5" h, 7" w x 4.25" d. 8.25" w (Plate).
