About the Item

A beautiful Minton porcelain Inkstand c.1840. The form of this Inkstand is the same basic shape as Minton’s ‘New Tray’ design number 245 as illustrated by Geoffrey Godden in plate 107 of his book on Minton Porcelains. This piece is exquisitely decorated with compartments of finely painted exotic birds in landscapes by Joseph Wareham within panels of raised, tooled,  chased & burnished gilding by John Robins. All reserved on a cobalt blue ground with calioute gilding. This Inkstand really shows Minton Sévres-style at it’s finest. Such a piece would have been extremely costly to produce and this is evidenced by a superb ‘Royal Déjeuner Service’ c.1840 in exactly the same pattern in the Royal Collection, illustrated by Geoffrey Godden in plate 25 of his book on Minton Porcelain. The Inkstand is shown here with both its original fixed inkwells and lids but the central component of the tray would have originally been a small, slender taper stick which is now sadly missing.
