About the Item

A trompe l’oeil cheese platter by Faiences et Poteries Provençales, Vallauris, France, circa 1950s. Made by the Faiences et Poteries Provençales studio, a prominent producer of art pottery in Vallauris, France. FPP was especially popular during the mid-20th century. The studio was known for both traditional and modern designs, including those influenced by Picasso. Glazed in the mustard yellow associated with ceramics from Southern France, and molded to resemble a woven straw basket. Cheeses in France are traditionally presented at table on straw mats or flat baskets with the cheese set on leaves. The glaze pools beautifully on the straw pattern mold work. A thick rolled rim gives this piece a substantial feel. Marked: FPP Vallauris France 11.25 inches in diameter x 1 inch high. Excellent condition.
