Keller et Guérin Lunéville Rare Set Pirelli Motoring Plates, 20th Century

About the Item

A very rare and interesting set of six French Pirelli advertising plates printed with motoring scenes in late Art Nouveau and early Art Deco style and produced by Keller et Guérin, Lunéville. The rounded plates are all decorated with sepia toned individual motoring scenes incorporating a Pirelli tyre. All are signed HL Roowy which seems to have been the name used by British artist Stanley Charles Rowles (b.1887) and who was a recognized and accomplished motoring artist in the early 20th century. He created similar advertising illustrations for Michelin. Dating is challenging as all the plates bear the printed marks for Keller & Guérin, Lunéville has used between 1880 and 1922. The mark was used again later but incorporated the date. Pirelli too launched on the stock exchange as an international business in 1922 which would also probably correspond to the designs on these plates. Due to the rarity however it is difficult to establish when these were actually made. The plates are offered in excellent original condition.
