Royal Doulton Burslem Art Deco Pip, Squeak & Wilfred Daily Mirror Pottery Saucer

About the Item

A rare Art Deco Royal Doulton Burslem ‘Pip, Squeak & Wilfred’ comic strip pottery plate by Welsh born artist Austin Bowen Payne (Welsh, 1876-1959) and dating between 1927 and 1935. The large empire shape saucer has printed and hand colored central cartoon scene portraying Pip, a dog with Squeak, a penguin, waving goodbye to Wilfred, a rabbit. The cartoon is based on a comic strip published in the Daily Mirror. The saucer has black printed Royal Doulton marks to the base and is printed DAILY MIRROR with various reference numbers. In good original condition with some fine glaze age crazing.
