About the Item
A Very Rare Pair of George I Britannia Standard Octagonal Pepper Casters Made in London in 1721 by Samuel Welder.
The Pepper Casters are modelled in a plain octagonal form and stand on a reeded spreading foot. The pull off covers are pierced with vertical geometric and linear designs and terminate in a cast octagonal finial. The front of each piece is engraved with a Crest and the base with a set of contemporary initials. The peppers are fully marked in the foot and with the maker's mark and leopard's head erased on the cover. The casters are in excellent condition, with a fine colour. Pairs of Pepper casters from the George I period are especially rare. Samuel Welder was a specialist caster maker. He was apprentice to Robert Keeble, 1707-14, and had workshops in Foster Lane when this caster was made.
