Edwardian Sterling Silver Budgerigar Pepper Shakers

About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive, pair of antique Edwardian English cast sterling silver pepper shakers modelled in the form of budgerigars; an addition to our collectable silver collection. These exceptional antique cast sterling silver peppers are realistically modelled in the form of budgerigars*. These Edwardian silver pepperettes are embellished with details reproducing the birds' feathers and anatomical features. The head of each silver bird is embellished with pierced 'pepper' holes, in addition to the original bead eyes. The underside of each budgie features a hinged cover/stopper. The chest and underside of one bird retains the original gilding. These exceptional peppers will have been crafted in the same year but due to the hallmarking system one is struck with the date letter 'i' and the other bears 'k'. These exceptional sterling silver bird pepper shakers are the finest of their type you could hope to acquire. * A budgerigar (often shortened to budgie) is also known in the United States as a parakeet. These small birds are often pets and the first budgerigar was first recorded in history by the renowned zoologist, George Shaw. A fine and impressive pair of antique Edwardian English sterling silver shell peppers; an addition to our novelty silver cruets/condiments collection. These exceptional, fine and impressive antique Edwardian sterling silver peppers are stylistically modelled in the form of 12-gauge shells. The upper portion of each pepper is embellished with pierced 'pepper' holes. Each pepper pot retains the original fully hallmarked screw fit detachable base. Each base retains the original gilding representing the brass of the shell and the body of each bears the original oxidised finish; examples with this combination is rare to the market. Such examples in this exceptional and almost unused condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. These items have been crafted as a matching pair and will have been crafted in fewer years, however, due to the hallmarking system one pepper is struck with the date letter 'g' (1902) and the other bears the date letter 'i' (1906). Condition These antique Edwardian shell silver peppers are an exceptional gauge of silver, exceptional quality and in exceptional condition. An exceptional, fine and impressive pair of antique Edwardian English sterling silver pepper grinders - boxed; an addition to our collectable silver collection. These exceptional antique sterling silver pepper grinders have a circular baluster shaped form. The surface of each pepper is plain and the lower portion is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest depicting out of a ducal coronet a horse's head*. These impressive silver peppers retain the original hallmarked circular rounded covers, each surmounted by the functional sterling silver finial; this allows access to permit the grinder to be filled. The underside of each grinder retains the original serrated grille and horizontal securing bar. These exceptional Edwardian peppers are fitted to the original presentation box, with a satin and velvet lined interior and securing with a push fit catch; this box is a fine feature of the pair of peppers. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Gowland Bros, 48 Cornhill'. A fine and impressive, unusual antique Victorian English sterling silver novelty pepper shaker; an addition to our diverse silverware collection. This fine antique Victorian sterling silver novelty pepper has a plain ovoid shaped form. The body of the pepper is embellished with impressive chased decoration depicting a cracked egg shell with a boy’s face and hands to the anterior surface and his feet and buttocks to the reverse. The body has pierced 'pepper' holes in a hexagram formation to the upper portion.
