English sterling silver “Warwick” type cruet set. It features a matching set of 3 baluster shaped silver castors with pull of tops and 2 silver and faceted glass oil and vinegar bottles and a four footed sterling silver stand with handle.. The cinquefoil frame has 4 shell feet and a shaped decorative cartouche, with matching armorial, to the front. Total weight of silver is 53.3 troy ounces. Measures: Castors height 7 3/8” and 6 1/4”; Bottles height with lid 7 1/2” The silver bottle tops are crested and the tops fit perfectly into the silver frame. There are matching hand engraved armorials on the 3 castors and upon the top of the oil and vinegar bottles. Coat of arms engraved upon the cartouche of the frame are of the family Bosvile with Bosvile, quartering Bolle (see below). All bear the same marks indicating that they are original to the set. Marks include the rampant lion standard mark, the crowned leopard London city mark, the year mark 'n' for May 1748 to 1749 and script initials SW; the makers touch mark of Samuel Wood. Samuel Wood (1704-1794) was the principle specialist castor and cruet stand maker in London from the early 1730's through the mid 1760's. He was apprenticed to Thomas Bamford 1721, free 1730. First mark entered as large-worker, 1733. Second mark about 1738. Third mark as shown on this set entered 1739. Fourth mark entered 1754. Fifth mark 1756. Warden 1758-60, and Prime Warden 1763. Through his apprenticeship to Thomas Bamford, who had been bound to Charles Adam, Wood came of a continuous line of specialist caster-makers and in turn trained both Jabez Daniell and Robert Piercey who were both established in the same line of production. Wood’s cruets and individual casters are of a uniformly high standard and one of the most attractively designed smaller items of period plate, which no eighteenth century table of quality would have been complete without. It is fully and clearly hallmarked under the base with all the castors hallmarked to match. The silver bottle tops are marked with proof mark and makers touch mark. The underside of the feet of the castors and stand bear weight scratch markings. It is in superior condition with no problems. Genealogical and Heraldic Summary: Family of Bosvile with Bosvile, quartering Bolle. Bosvile may be sometimes spelt as ‘Bosville’, and the Bolle surname is often alternatively spelt as either ‘Bolles’ or ‘Bowles’. Arms: Argent five fusils in fess gules in chief three bears’ heads erased sable (for Bosvile) over all an escutcheon of pretence Quarterly 1st and 4th Argent five fusils in fess gules in chief three bears’ heads erased sable (for Bosvile) 2nd and 3rd Azure three standing cups argent out of each a boar’s head or (for Bolle) Crest: An ox issuant from a wood proper (for Bosvile). These armorial bearings undoubtedly commemorate the marriage of Thomas Bosvile (1705 - 1771) son of John and Mary Bosvile, of Braithwell in the County of Yorkshire and of Ulverstone Hall in the County of Leicestershire and his cousin, Bridget Bosvile (1716 - 1793), the daughter and heiress of The Reverend Thomas Bosville, the Rector of Ufford in the County of Northamptonshire and his wife, Elizabeth Bolle, the daughter and co-heiress of John Bolle, of Thorpe Hall in the County of Lincolnshire. Thomas and Bridget were married on the 25th July 1742 at the Parish Church of St Ben’et Paul’s Wharf in the City of London. Thomas was a Freeman of the City of London and member of the Worshipful Company of Girdlers, one of the City’s livery companies. He owned property in the City, in the County of Middlesex as well as the Bosvile family estates in the Counties of Leicestershire, Lincolnshire and Yorkshire. Thomas’s Will states that he and Bridget had two sons during their marriage, the eldest son being, William Parkin Bosvile, whilst their younger son was named Thomas. They are of a prestigious line, dating to the Norman Conquest. The progenitor of the family was Sir Martin de Bosvile who came from the village of Bosville, some ten miles south of Saint Valery en Caux in Normandy. A memoir of the family states that Sir Martin served as the Treasurer to King William I during his invasion of England in 1066, which office he appears to have held until his death in 1092 during the reign of King William II, the Conqueror’s son. Sir Martin died at his Manor of Chawforth in the County of Buckinghamshire. A full copy of the genealogical and heraldic research report will accompany the cruet set. 10355-2007
