About the Item

T.G. Hawkes founded what was probably this country’s most successful factory devoted exclusively to the cutting of glass. It certainly had the longest period of operation of any cutting shop. Over the next 82 years they created the most magnificent cut-glass and acid-etched glass in the world. They also combined their glasswork with sterling silver to create this beautiful combination. Here is a perfect example of one such piece by Hawkes. This compote has a sterling base and acid-etched glass. Leaves and garlands drape the edge. In the center, the glass tapers in with an indented design. It’s a lovely combination of modern and old-world.

Sterling and Crystal Compote
By Steuben Hawkes
Located in Brooklyn, NY
Based in Corning, NY, T.G. Hawkes & Co. (circa 1880-1959) was established by Thomas Gibbons Hawkes (1846-1913). Born in Ireland, Hawkes immigrated to Brooklyn in 1862, then moved to Corning, opening his own cut glass firm in 1880. His firm, T.G. Hawkes & Co., soon became famous for quality wares. Hawkes' glassware was used in the White House from 1885 until 1938. Hawkes pieces can be found in museums world-wide. Over one hundred years old, this lovely crystal compote with a sterling silver base evokes a time gone-by. A time when entertaining was an art onto its self and beautiful items— objet d’art were sought after and collected. It has a feminine silhouette and delicate etching all around on top. A great piece to leave out on your coffin table...
