HESTER BATEMAN Geo. III Sterling Sweets or Sugar Basket with Cobalt Glass Liner

About the Item

One of THE finest and most rare collectible Antique English Geo. III hallmarked STERLING SILVER hand pierced and engraved Sweets or Sugar Basket, retaining its original cobalt glass liner (undamaged). Made by the most famous and most highly collected Georgian British female silversmith, Hester Bateman, with her maker's mark (somewhat rubbed but still discernable) and hallmarks for London 1782/'83. In pristine, age-appropriate condition, this sweets/sugar basket has no signs of wear and exhibits Hester Bateman's "signature" bright cut hand engraving within the delicately pierced body. The collett base is also pierced and engraved and evidences a swing handle with beading to mimic the beading along the top edge and base edge. A rarity worth having, these Hester Bateman pieces are incredibly hard to find. With its handle down, it measures 5.50 inches high. Sterling weight (without liner) is approx. 4.5 troy ounces.
