A Pair of Silver Art Nouveau Candelabra by Eduard Friedman, Vienna circa 1910

About the Item

A striking pair of silver Art Nouveau candelabra by the renowned Viennese silversmith Eduard Friedman, these three-light pieces exemplify the organic dynamism and sculptural elegance characteristic of the period. Each candelabrum is raised on three jagged, stylized legs, applied to a domed, stepped base richly chased with sharply defined floral motifs resembling lilies, issuing from reed-like foliate branches. The visual rhythm of the base sets the tone for the fluent botanical ornamentation that continues throughout the form. The central stem, baluster and parson-knopped in shape, rises with embossed floral detailing, culminating in a flower-shaped boboche and an urn-form candle cup, chased with a naturalistic shell motif that lends the upper section a sense of layered texture and movement. From either side of the stem, two sharply angled branches extend outward—pierced close to the base and visually reminiscent of stylized arrows. These branches are jagged and expressive, yet harmoniously integrated, adorned with chased lily blooms and elongated foliate shoots that echo the base design. Each arm terminates in a similarly adorned flower-form boboche and urn-shaped candle holder, completing the composition with symmetrical balance and ornamental refinement. Marked by Eduard Friedman, whose work captures the distinct Viennese interpretation of the Art Nouveau aesthetic, these candelabra are both bold in silhouette and intricate in surface detailing—sculptural yet lyrical in their execution. An exceptional pair that embodies the fluid grace and symbolic naturalism of Art Nouveau silverwork in early 20th-century Vienna. Maker: Eduard Friedman, Vienna Hallmarked at the center stem and the top of the base. Weighs approximately 2400 grams ( small plaster weight at the bottom of the two candelabra )

A Silver Shabbat Candelabra, Austria Circa 1925
Located in New York, NY
An elegant silver Shabbat candelabra from Austria circa 1925 is an impressive piece of Judaica, blending the cultural and artistic heritage of Jewish traditions with the craftsmanship of early 20th-century Austrian silversmiths. The early 20th century in Austria was a period of artistic innovation, with the influence of the Vienna Secession movement, which emphasized modernist design and craftsmanship. Jewish communities in Austria had a rich tradition of creating and using beautifully crafted ritual objects for religious observance. Candelabra is set on a shaped stepped dome, part-fluted with a cylindrical stem capped by a similar floral-shaped dome. The branches for the candelabra artistically stem from an intertwined center and curve stylishly outward to hold the bobeches for the beaker-shaped cups. A pierced Star of David rests on top of the bell finial applied to the center stem. This design reflects a blend of traditional Jewish themes...

A Pair of Silver Tefillin Covers by Bezalel, Jerusalem Circa 1925
Located in New York, NY
A Very Rare Pair of Silver Tefillin Covers made by Bezalel in Jerusalem, Circa 1925. The Acid-etched technique with which these tefillin covers were made accompanied by the classic Bezalel design is truly remarkable. Probably 1 or 2 of these tefillin covers were ever made by Bezalel in this fashion in the early 20th Century. Featured on the outside of the four sides of the tefillin covers are beautiful chased motifs of grape clusters on hanging vines, pomegranates growing on trees, palm trees with hanging date clusters, and fig bushes with figs sprouting from their branches. These four species of fruit are part of the seven species...
