Sterling Silver & Crystal Covered Bowl

About the Item

Proudly offering a sterling silver and crystal covered bowl. The silver lid was manufactured by Gorham Silversmiths of Providence, Rhode Island and is hallmarked 1916. The crystal bowl was manufactured by the Hawkes Glass Company of Corning, New York. Based in Corning, NY, T.G. Hawkes & Co. (c.1880-1959) was established by Thomas Gibbons Hawkes (1846-1913). Born in Ireland, Hawkes immigrated to Brooklyn in 1862, then moved to Corning, opening his own cut glass firm in 1880. His firm, T.G. Hawkes & Co., soon became famous for quality wares. Hawkes' glassware was used in the White House from 1885 until 1938. Hawkes pieces can be found in museums world-wide. The sterling cover has an intricate design of flowers, leaves and swirls against a pinstriped background. The square shaped handle has the exact design with a hand engraved script monogram in the center. The crystal bowl has an acid-etched pattern of flowers and garlands to mimic the lid. The Hawkes Company worked closely with the leading silver producers of the time to create some of the most beautiful pieces of sterling and crystal combinations.
