An exceptional, fine and impressive, large antique George IV English sterling silver meat skewer or letter opener; an addition to our diverse flatware collection.
This exceptional and large antique George IV sterling silver meat skewer/letter opener has a tapered form.
The surface of this skewer is embellished with a contemporary bright cut engraved crest of upon a naval crown thereon a fox passant, all below the plain circular ring loop finger piece.
The reverse surface is plain and unembellished apart from the featured hallmarks.
The initials within the maker's marks, in addition to the standardisation of the surround could pertain to a multitude of antique silversmiths; these silvermsiths include William Eaton, Esterbrook and Eley II.
This impressive skewer is larger example of its type than you would expect to find.
The original use of this item was purely as a silver meat skewer. Due to its form, this piece may certainly be used as an effective letter opener.
Given the evidence of the crest (with its label of three points charged upon the fox’s breast) engraved upon this meat skewer it was undoubtedly in the possession of Rear Admiral Edward Le Cras Thornbrough (born 1st March 1795 died 25th December 1857) the only surviving child of Admiral Sir Edward Thornbrough, GCB and his first wife, Ann Le Cras. Rear Admiral Thornbrough was son and grandson of Royal Naval officers. His father Admiral Sir Edward Thornbrough was a senior, long-serving veteran officer of the Royal Navy during the late eighteenth and early 19th century having seen action in the American Revolutionary War, the French Revolutionary Wars and the Napoleonic Wars; whilst his grandfather was Commander Edward Thornbrough. Rear Admiral Thornbrough entered the Royal Navy in 1806 and saw action throughout the later Napoleonic period on both the Home and Mediterranean stations. He married Emily Raikes Garrett, the second daughter of Daniel Garrett, of Colt House, near Honiton in the County of Devon on the 30th November 1820.

The use of rare and exotic materials such as the coconut became popular across Europe during the Middle Ages, when it was believed that these unique materials from distant lands possessed mystical powers. It was held that they could detect, and even deter, the effects of poison and as such were employed as drinking vessels, often mounted with ornate embellishments of silver. As more trade routes opened up during the 16th century, materials such as the coconut became more widely available, though still only afforded to the wealthy minority in Europe and England. And, while they eventually lost their appeal for their magical powers, coconuts proved an ideal material for cups and pots and retained their popularity as such. 18th C George 11nd Tall Wine Drinking Glass Solid Stem and Long Tear Domed Foot

This is a very good, tall, English, mid-Georgian, hand blown, wine drinking glass, dating to the George II period of the mid-18th century, circa 1740.
These 18th Century hand blown drinking glasses are uniquely individual and very collectable.
This wine glass is hand blown from English lead glass. It is heavy and has a soft grey color, with some age related wear to the surface and foot rim as expected with well over 250 years of use. The glass has the usual striations, inclusions and tiny bubbles you would expect to see in 18th century glass, which gives these glasses their unique charm, with no two glasses being the same.
The glass has a beautifully drawn round funnel (RF) bowl which continues into a thick solid stem enclosing a very decorative long tear and leading to a good domed foot having a rough snapped-off pontil mark to the underside. The "domed" foot tends to be a much rarer foot form.
There are no chips, cracks or any evidence of restoration though the glass does have some scratches from use to the underside of the foot. Please see images.

Bowl rim diameter: 2.1 inches.
Foot diameter: 2.96 inches.
Height: 6.82 inches.
The glass has a good ring to it when tapped with a finger.
We date this glass to the George II period of the 18th century, circa 1740.

Each cistern is in the form of a fluted vase on a rectangular pedestal. The lead-lined vases have brass handles, removable lids with pineapple finials and taps. The crossbanded pedestals have cupboard doors enclosing slatted shelves for warming plates in one and a lead-lined slops drawers, a tambour fronted shelf and a cellaret in the other.
Susan Stuart, 'Gillow of Lancaster and London', 2008 vol 1 p308-315 illustrates many pedestal urns including the drawings for Workington Hall, Cumbria, dated 1788. These fine antique George III sterling silver coasters have an octagonal shaped form onto a stepped base.
Each coaster is embellished with a band of pierced and pin struck decoration to the upper portion and plain pin struck borders to each panel.
The decoration to the body of each piece incorporates a pin struck bordered shaped cartouche displaying a contemporary bright cut engraved crest.
The coasters are fitted with fine and impressive turned mahogany bases.
Each coaster retains the original green baize to the underside.
