About the Item

An exceptional, fine and impressive set of four antique Edwardian English sterling silver and enamel bird menu / card holders - boxed; an addition to our diverse dining silverware collection. These exceptional antique Edwardian cast sterling silver menu holders have cylindrical bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive silver model depicting individual game birds including: a grouse, a snipe, a partridge and a pheasant. The cast silver birds each bear details reproducing the plumage and anatomical features, in addition to gem set eyes. The silver gilt bases of these impressive menu card holders are encircled with an impressive panel of green hot enamel decoration and bear a plain vertical support to the posterior surface. The emanating support and base of each piece retain the original gilding. This impressive set of silver bird menu holders in silver is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with a push fit catch. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'By Appointment to H.M The King, The Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Company Ltd, 112, Regent St London'. These exceptional menu holders were crafted by the renowned silversmiths Goldsmiths & Silversmiths Co Ltd. Such original examples of this high quality and condition are becoming increasingly difficult to locate. Condition These impressive antique bird menu holders in silver are a superior gauge of silver and quality, as to be expected of this maker. Each piece is in exceptional presentation condition. The cast decoration is all very sharp. The enamel decoration is in perfect condition. Full hallmarks struck to the rim of each base are very clear; the hallmarks are struck deeply due to the superior gauge of silver. Reflections in photographs may detract from the true representation of these silver & enamel menu card holders. A fine and impressive set of six antique George V English sterling silver menu / card holders - boxed; an addition to our diverse dining silverware collection. These fine antique George V sterling silver menu card holders have circular shaped bases. Each piece is surmounted with an impressive wishbone* shaped design with a paralleling shaped support. The subtly convex bases are encircled with an elevated scalloped border. The weighted bases of these impressive menu holders are fitted with green baize to the underside. This impressive set of antique silver menu card holders is fitted to the original hinged leatherette box with satin and velvet lined interior, secured with two hinged catches. The interior of the box bears the retailer's mark 'Robert Stewart (Jewellers) Ltd, 75 Sauchiehall Street, Glasgow'. A wishbone, otherwise known as the furcular, is a forked bone found in birds and some dinosaurs. The main function of the bone is to provide strength between the neck and breast, to protect the creature during battle. The Ancient Romans perceived this bone as a symbol of luck which allowed the progression of breaking a dried chicken wishbone apart whilst making a wish; this procedure determined the person with the bigger half would receive their wish or have good fortune.
