Polychrome Aesthetic Transferware Plates and Cups Wisconsin by Brownfield 19th c
About the Item
Polychrome Aesthetic Transferware Plates and cups "Wisconsin" pattern by Brownfield circa 1880.
Brownfield gives us an archetypal Anglo-japanesque aesthetic pattern in "Wisconsin."
Concentric Japanese style borders around the flange start with stylized triangular sunflowers laid in a pattern to resemble weaving.
A lighter inner border, based on a Chinese cloud pattern, terminates with a thin rope border highlighted in rust enamel. In the center, a diamond shape reserve features an old English scene, while the framework around it features four stylized sunflowers laid over the Chinese cloud pattern. The sunny, summery color palette runs from rust red enamel to ochre lustre, all playing well off the "ivory" body. Brownfield seems to have caught the spirit of the 1880's in their use of Japanesque devices, ivory body and generous enamel highlighting over transfer printing.
