The 'CUBE' Silvered Metal Tea Pot, Circa 1930
About the Item
The patent for the cube teapot was first lodged in November 1916. 'The specifications state that functional considerations were paramount, the absorption of the handle, spout and knop into the plane of the body eliminated the possibility of breakages which occurred with a conventional design in commercial use and facilitated storage. The manufacture of this design gave it a stylistic importance and the object an aesthetic status that were never intended but one could argue that, three years before it even came into existence, the designer had unconsciously anticipated the goals of the Bauhaus doctrine. Elegant and modernist space saving design was appreciated by Cunard Steamship Company, which commissioned this for use on its luxury ocean liners. Note: Teapot dimensions only 4 x 4 x 4 inches.
