John Prip for Reed & Barton Dimension Coffee Service Set
About the Item
Dimension service was introduced in 1961; the onion-shaped tea and coffee service in silver plate is a classic design that is currently on display at the Rhode Island School of Design (RISD) Museum and the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. The round-bodied vessel curves smoothly into its cover, ending with a pencil-slim point and topped with a knob. Plastic or vinyl raffia-wrapped handle echoes the shape of the pot. The service was in production from 1961 to 1977.
The pieces are marked as follows:
coffee pot - "Reed & Barton 1500 dimension"
covered sugar bowl - "Reed & Barton 1502 Dimension"
creamer - "Reed & Barton 1503 dimension".
Each piece is also marked with production numbers in hand writing in etching on the bottoms; the sugar bowl has the original manufacturer's foil sticker attached, and the coffee pot and the creamer have the traces of the foil sticker visible. The set is in very good vintage condition, ready to be used and displayed.
John Prip (1922-2009) was a renowned American metalsmith and designer. Trained as a silversmith in Denmark, he began teaching in 1948 at the School for American Craftsmen in Alfred, NY, and followed the school's relocation to the Rochester Institute of Technology in Rochester, NY. He was also a regular exhibitor at Shop One, an innovative retail outlet for contemporary crafts that he helped to establish in Rochester. In 1962 John Prip came to RISD (Rhode Island School of Design) as head of the Department of Jewelry and Light Metals. Together with Tage Frid, head of the furniture design program at RISD, these Danish-trained craftsmen transformed their respective departments, set high standards for design and technique, and instructed a generation of artists who lead their fields today. When he retired from RISD in 1981, his metalsmith department was recognized as one of the best in the country.
In addition to his legacy as a teacher, Prip is known for his work as Designer/Craftsman in Residence at Reed and Barton. In 1960, he joined the firm in Taunton, MA, with the title of artist-craftsman-in-residence, and during the 1960s, he produced a number of successful tableware patterns that brought distinction to the company and an affordable Danish Modem style to American dining rooms. Several patterns are still in production today. The onion shapes of this tea service grew out of forged silver prototypes that Prip had been working on for several years prior to their production.
