About the Item

A highly stylised antique silver coffee pot in the Art Nouveau style. Made at the beginning of the 20th century, this lovely handmade and hand chased silver coffee pot, with its natural and swirling form, personifies the Art Nouveau style and era. Even the wooden handle is hand carved in a natural, flowing form. The ornamental Art Nouveau style flourished throughout Europe and the USA between about 1890 and 1910, and is characterised by its use of long, sinuous, organic lines employed. Most often featured in architecture, interior design, jewellery and glass, posters and illustration, it was a deliberate attempt to create a new style, free of the imitative historicism that dominated much of 19th century art and design. In England, the style's immediate precursors were Aestheticism, which depended heavily on the expressive quality of organic lines, and the Arts and Crafts movement. The weight given is estimated, 630g (20.25 troy ozs) excluding the handle.
