19th Century Late Regency Pollard Oak Sarcophagus Form Cellarette

About the Item

19th Century late Regency pollard oak sarcophagus form cellarette stamped Wilkinsons & Sons, 14 Ludgate Hill, the hinged lid enclosing a six division lined interior with brass ratchet support. The front features a carved laurel wreath motif within a roundel, on moulded plinth base complete with concealed brass casters. Circa 1825. Pollard Oak is the wood derived from oak trees that have been ‘pollarded’. Pollarding is a system of pruning the top branches of a tree which then promotes a dense head of branches and foliage. When pruned in this way, the tree forms a lump or ‘burr’ which when cut for veneer has a lovely swirling figure in the grain. Cabinetmakers Wilkinson & Son were renowned for fine quality cabinet making and beautiful inlay with gilt decoration. The firm of Wilkinson was established circa 1790 by William and Thomas Wilkinson. William was an upholsterer and cabinet-maker who was particularly known for his patent furniture. By 1808 William had established a business of his own at 14 Ludgate Hill, London. Wilkinson built up a flourishing trade, with significant commissions from such distinguished clients as the Goldsmiths' Company. His sons William and Charles joined him in the business and it continued after their father’s death in 1833 as William & Charles Wilkinson.
