A fine George IV mahogany wine cooler attributed to Gillows, in the form of a classical urn with everted lip and boldly gadrooned sides, set upon a flaring, flanged support with fluted lobes, on a square plinth, with the original lead liner and a new removable spun brass liner. English, c1813. Footnote: For a very similar single example purchased by Stephen Tempest in 1813 for Broughton Hall, North Yorkshire see Susan E Stuart, Gillows of Lancaster and London, 1730-1840, Antique Collectors’ Club, Woodbridge, 2008. Vol II p94 pl 640 and Vol I p323 pl 367 (in situ underneath a sideboard).

William IV Mahogany Teapoy

The sarcophagus-shaped top section has a hinged lid and is richly carved throughout in high relief. The everted sides have fleshy palmettes and paired acanthus leaves, while the top has four pairs of leaves which are joined by a carved rib in the centre and scroll outwards to up-curled edges. It is raised on a gadrooned and turned pedestal set on a quatrefoil base with reeded bun feet disguising the original castors. The interior, without fittings, is relined in crushed blue velvet.
