A magnificent, fine and impressive antique Georgian English sterling silver wine cooler made by Henry Chawner; an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection This magnificent antique George III sterling silver wine cooler has a circular rounded form onto a shaped circular spreading foot. The surface of the cooler is embellished with exceptional chased floral and scrolling foliate decoration, all on a matte background. The decoration to the body incorporates a large scroll bordered cartouche to either side, each ornamented with a contemporary engraved coat of arms depicting firstly a chevron charged with three lions passant guardant, secondly in chief three cross-crosslet and to the base a lion passant. This antique wine cooler is fitted with an exceptional pair of cast silver handles realistically modelled in the form of an eagle with raised wings, perched on a large scrolling leaf design. This impressive cooler is supported by a cast circular shaped spreading foot embellished with further floral and foliate decoration, accented with a large scrolling border to the rim. This exceptional Georgian wine cooler retains the original, hallmarked detachable liner and push fit cover. The cast sterling silver torus-shaped cover is ornamented with large floral and foliate designs, with an opposing scrolling border paralleling the shaped rim. A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver wine coolers made by Paul Storr; an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection These magnificent antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a classic campania shaped form onto a plain knopped pedestal and domed circular spreading foot. The surface of the upper portion of each body is plain and embellished with two large applied tied oak leaf wreath cartouches, one side bears the contemporary bright cut engraved coat of arms* depicting a pile engrailed with three cross-crosslet fitchy, all surmounted with the crest displaying a cock's head. The second cartouche on each holder bears the contemporary bright cut engraved presentation inscription 'Given to William Rigden, In Remembrance of William Galdork, by W.H.B'. These silver wine bottle holders each have an applied moulded decorated border to the flared rim. The lower bulbous portion of each wine cooler is encompassed with exceptional chased fluted decoration below an applied ribbed border. Each wine cooler is supported by a domed circular spreading foot embellished with a chased egg decorated border and a plain collet style rim. A Nelson commemorative wine cooler by Davenport. This terracotta cooler is relief moulded with a portrait of Admiral Viscount Nelson, in full uniform and medals, between two acorn-bearing oak boughs on one side and a naval panoply on the reverse. The rim comprises tied reeds and twin dolphin-mask handles are attached to the sides. English, circa 1815. Two very similar examples from the collection of Horatio, third Lord Nelson, are illustrated in an article titled ‘Nelson Relics and Relic Hunters’ in The Windsor Magazine, Vol. XX. June-November 1904, p.519. (See also page 4.) A third with a paper label stating ‘Exceedingly rare (Lockett)’ was exhibited at the Hanley Museum, item No.1721 (see Britain on the High Seas, from Nelson to Churchill, p.71, Wick Antiques, 2019). John Davenport (1765-1848) trained as a potter with Thomas Wolfe of Stoke, Staffordshire in 1785. By 1794 he had founded his own pottery factory counting the Prince of Wales among his customers. A magnificent, fine and impressive pair of antique Georgian English sterling silver wine coolers, an addition to our antique wine and drink related silverware collection. These magnificent antique George III sterling silver wine coolers have a Classic Campania shaped form onto a knopped pedestal foot. The lower bulbous portion of each antique wine cooler is embellished with magnificent chased decoration displaying scrolling leaf designs orienting towards the central point. The surface of each body is embellished with the contemporary engraved inscription 'Presented by the Inhabitants of St Helena to Colonel Mark Wilks, late Governor of that Island, in Memorial of their Esteem, Respect & Gratitude, 1816' to one side. The other side of each piece features the contemporary flat engraved coat of arms depicting party per pale, to the Dexter three heraldic roses above a paly of 8, to the sinister a bend charged with three escallops between three lozenge to the chief and base. The aforementioned coat of arms is surmounted with the crest of a wolf rampant collared, all above the bannered motto 'Pro Rege' - For the King. The upper rim of each piece is encircled with a convex band ornamented with exceptional chased evolute spiraling foliate designs accented with floral motifs. Each antique wine cooler is fitted with an exceptional pair of cast handles embellished with scrolling leaf emanating towards a central knop. The impressive sockets of each handle are ornamented with a magnificent cast and applied Bacchanal style bearded mask design.
