19th C Blackthorn "Irish Walking Stick" With Presentation Inscription Dated 1887

About the Item

Victorian Irish, late 19th century "presentation gift" walking stick with inscription etched onto a silver shield near the top; inscribed "Paul From Jim" Nov. 9th, 1887" with fleur de lis decor. Very rare and unusual walking stick because of it's gnarly random knotted and knuckled hand carved patterned blackthorn wooden shaft; the wood being indigenous to Ireland and occasionally found in the making of fine canes; used because of it's strength, and was utilized; not just for the infirm, but by the Irish for hiking the countryside or going on long walks. The cane is in good original condition, has not been restored in any way and maintains it's original warm patinated surface; there are some finish losses here and there; mainly near the bottom of the cane (see images). The top appears to be silver albeit unmarked; it is initial monogramed in script (see images)----those initials look like "R.B.M." The oversized 1 3/8" ferrel is made of pewter and is original; it is wrapped around the base of the cane. The cane actually looks, and could very well be, somewhat older and early Victorian and purchased as an antique in 1887 and presented to Paul by Jim; especially considering the different monogram initials. Suitable for use today after nearly 140 years, or for the discerning collector of walking sticks to display as a lovely addition of 19th century folk art. Simply a wonderful, authentic antique item. This form is highly sought after by connoisseurs and collectors of fine canes. Dimensions 34" long x 1 3/8" diameter of top of cane x shaft varies from 1" to 1 1/4".
